Does it work with the script turned off?

Yes for reading, no for sending.

Every page shows all of its text. The navigation is a row of ordinary links, so nothing has to be opened, and no part of a page is waiting on code before it appears.

What changes is the request button: it ships out of use and only the script switches it on. Without that, pressing it would either send a half formed request or fall back to putting your name and address into the address bar. A short note beside the button gives the mail address and the telephone instead.

Can it be driven from the keyboard alone?

Yes. Every link, field and button is reachable in the order they appear, and the focus marker is a three pixel dark red outline that is never suppressed. Ahead of everything else on each page sits a link that skips the navigation and lands in the text.

What does a screen reader get?

• One first level heading per page, and levels that step down by one at a time
• The page language declared as United States English
• Alternative text on every image, and no fact that exists only inside a picture
• Real header cells on every table, with the claims table carrying a header for each row as well
• A label on every field of the request form, and the single hidden field is a trap for automated submissions: out of the tab order and hidden from assistive software

Does anything depend on seeing color?

No. Every text pairing on this site was measured, all of them clear the ratio for ordinary text, and the four largest clear the stricter one.

On the claims table the value is spelled out as a word on every row. Nowhere on this site does color alone carry a meaning.

What about movement, and magnification?

The only motion is a brief fade as a section arrives, and a browser or system asking for reduced motion switches it off rather than shortening it. Nothing plays, blinks, scrolls by itself or covers the reading.

Text is set in relative units and doubles in size without overlapping. On a narrow screen the page becomes one column; the wide tables scroll inside their own box rather than dragging the page sideways.

What is known to be imperfect

1. A margin note changes position. On a wide screen it sits beside its section; on a narrow one it drops in underneath. Somebody moving between the two will find them in different places.
2. A wide table on a small phone still needs a sideways drag inside its own box. Nothing is lost, but it is awkward.
3. Testing was not exhaustive. What is described here was checked with a keyboard and the tools to hand, which is not the same as testing every browser against every screen reader.

Send the page and a description of what went wrong to runs@northfieldbulletin.com. If the browser and the assistive software are easy to name, name them; if not, send it anyway. Anything that prevents reading is treated here as a defect to be repaired rather than an improvement to be considered, and the answer comes inside the same two posted days as everything else.
