How Many People the Desk Has to Seat

A count, not a class of car

Much of this trade organizes itself around what kind of car turns up. This one does not, and the reason is not style. A desk that names a class is describing something it does not own and cannot inspect, and if the car that arrives is not that thing the desk has made a promise somebody else has to keep.

So the record says how many people. What arrives to carry them is the operator's decision, made against its own fleet on the day.

Where the count starts to matter

Small groups are easy: most operators in this county can seat them and the request goes out wide. As the number climbs the list of operators who can take the job narrows, and past a certain point it narrows to a handful.

That has two effects worth knowing before anybody asks:

• Notice matters more. A large group booked at short notice may find nothing at all, not because of price but because the vehicles that seat it are already out.
• The quote spreads. With few operators to ask, the answers come back further apart than they do for a small group.

What is not recorded

Names beyond the person making the booking, ages, relationships, or anything about why anybody is traveling. The desk has no use for it and does not ask. What goes to the operator is a count and the two ends.

When it changes

Before a car is committed, a change to the count is simply the question asked again. After it is committed, the desk passes the change on. If the vehicle allocated will not take the extra person, the operator will say so, and at that point it is a new job rather than an amendment.
